My Day with Shellye Archambeau: A Lesson on Unapologetic Ambition and Mentorship

As a woman in tech, I always seek inspiration and insights from successful women. Shellye Archambeau's book, "Unapologetically Ambitious," was one of the books on my pandemic reading list, and I was thrilled when I learned that she was visiting our office. I am so grateful to Joyce Wright for making the recommendation on Facebook. When my Co-Founder told me she would be visiting, I was nervous and excited. I wanted to make her visit memorable for everyone involved, especially myself, so I invited some Code School students and AutoZone friends to lunch with us.

As we sat down to lunch, I could feel my nerves kicking in, but Shellye's warm and welcoming presence immediately put me at ease. After hugs and greetings from some of my AutoZone friends, we sat around the table and hung on Shellye's every word. You could feel the resounding chorus of women responding in agreement and acknowledging the conviction that we, as women are often owning tasks that we don't have to own. The students were also excited and prepared with thoughtful questions for her, and I was impressed (as usual) with the amount of preparation they put into this meeting.

During our conversation, Shellye shared valuable insights about the importance of mentorship and the burden of ownership. She talked about the need to take care of oneself and not always bear the responsibility for everyone and everything. I was especially struck by her feedback directly to me on the use of the word "sacrifice." She encouraged me to reframe my thinking and not view the pursuit of success as a sacrifice but rather as an investment in myself and my goals.

Shellye's visit also reminded me of the importance of staying connected with mentors and seeking guidance from those before me. The pandemic made me lose touch with my mentors, but after our conversation, I felt convinced to reengage with them.

Overall, my day with Shellye Archambeau was a lesson on unapologetic ambition and the power of mentorship. Her insights and guidance will stay with me for a long time, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have met her. This experience will undoubtedly go down as one of the highlights of 2023!

I highly recommend reading her book Unapologetically Ambitious: Take Risks, Break Barriers, and Create Success on Your Own Terms. There is also an audiobook with Shellye reading, and I love to listen to the audio version, especially when the author is reading their content. You can feel the passion of their writing through the inflection and tones in their voice. There is a YouTube Channel where she goes live and answers questions https://www.youtube.com/@unapologeticallyambitious/streams
